A New Twist on In the World, but Not of It
Recently, a friend of mine was commenting on a group of people she was interacting with – they’re in the world, but not with it, she said.
The main issues she was referring to were: lack of efficiency, being challenged with timely communication, administrative and logistics skills – all in all, a general degree of ineptness in the world. A sad comment since this is a group of leaders and teachers.
In the World, but Not of It is a well known phrase that speaks to living a life in the world, but being intimately aware of and in touch with one’s spiritual origin or true nature. The main point being that one is freed from the delusions of ego structure and ego-identity.
This got me to thinking of the masses of people jumping into social media with a total lack of understanding of the concept and any sort of strategy or goals for their social/business online networking. Many of the people I know that put up profiles on Facebook, Twitter, MySpce, LinkedIn and the like with no profile data or personal image seem to be concerned with privacy issues. I’m curious as to how they expect to network behind a screen of anonymity and why they would even join a social or business network.
In the World, but not with it – a new understanding of the person behind the generic social avatar.
