  • Magic that Liberates

The Miraculous: more magical than Harry Potter

magic-realizationHuman beings seem to have a love and fascination for the magical and miraculous. Look at how many books, TV shows and films have themes of magic and miracles: from Harry Potter to Merlin to Gandalf to Dr. Strange; from Excalibur and Bewitched  to Jumanji and Hocus Pocus. Magic pervades our stories. Even lottery ticket sales reflect a certain amount of magical thinking.

In comparison to fancy thoughts of magic and miracles, daily life may seem a bit too ordinary, even boring. A little magic or a now and then miracle would certainly help to spice up the ordinary. And yet, when we look more closely at what science is revealing about the universe, the subatomic world, the human brain and the potential for technological and biological evolution – well, it all seem spectacularly magical and miraculous.

Recently, I attended a retreat with A.H. Almaas, founder of the Diamond Approach to Self-Realization. The theme of the retreat was The Magic of Realization. In his talks, Almaas addressed how we lose sight of the magic in everyday life, how the mind orients toward magic like everything else – externally and as a means to control external events; and how ordinary life from the perspective of deep realization is astoundingly magical and miraculous. By seeing the magic in everyday life, we can be continually inspired by our personal experience.

  • Alchemy & the Philosophers’ Stone

Harry Potter, Russia, The Flash, Getty Research Institute and A. H. Almaas share an interest in alchemy and the philosophers’ stone.

philosophers-stone-alchemyShambhala will be releasing A. H. Almaaas’ eighteenth book, The Alchemy of Freedom: The Philosophers’ Stone and the Secrets of Existence, in late February 2017.

A quick search on Google reveals:

    • Harry Potter: The Philosophers’ Stone is in the news as an extremely rare first edition of the book, which includes 43 annotations and 22 original drawings by the author, is set to go on display at Edinburgh’s Writers’ Museum.
    • Dr. Alchemy, a villain on CW’s The Flash, has come into possession of mystical artifact, the Philosopher’s Stone – I assume a villain in possession of the Philosophers’ Stone is not good news for planet earth.
    • Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, is hosting an exhibition titled ‘The Art of Alchemy’, on view through February 12, 2017.

From The Alchemy of Freedom book description:

For millennia alchemists sought the philosophers’ stone, the miracle substance believed to be the key to all the secrets of existence. The quest was fueled by some of the prime questions of human existence: What am I? Why am I here? How has this world come to be?

This quest is mentioned in Anika Burgess’ article How Alchemy Has Been Depicted in Art through the Ages on Atlas Obscura:

In the 1738 edition of Physica subterranea, written by German alchemist Johann Becher, there is a particularly intriguing illustration. Titled The Body as an Alchemical Laboratory, it depicts a figure framed by drapes and surrounded by floating symbols. To an untrained eye, these symbols are indecipherable. But for those that studied alchemy—primarily known for attempting to turn base metals into gold—they codify formulas, elements, planetary metals and ingredients.

Some of the symbols shown relate to Venus (linked to copper), Mercury (linked to quicksilver), along with “primary catalysts” like sulfur. Their design is almost mystical, akin to the hidden codes of a secret order. It’s a fascinating example of how alchemy has been depicted over the centuries.

alchemy-of-freedomIn his new book, Almaas, founder of the Diamond Approach, shows that the tremendous liberating power of the mysterious philosophers’ stone is closer to us than we realize. In fact, it is the true nature of all reality—in all times and all places, without being limited to being anything in particular. Through the philosophers’ stone, real transformation can happen, our consciousness can become free, and we can open to all the possibilities of reality.

Of course, many are still curious about turning lead into gold – perhaps the Russians are coming closer to that reality: Turn Coal into Gold? Russia Scientists Say They’ve Discovered Alchemy Process.

alchemy-philosophers-stoneLeaving that quest to others, Almaas discusses factors that are involved in igniting the catalytic property of the philosophers’ stone and then begins to unpack the properties of true nature when it is free of constraints. Finally, we are left with the revelation that true nature is endlessly knowable, and yet nothing we can know or say about it exhausts its mystery and power. The result is a new understanding of what liberation and practice are—and a view of what it’s like when seeking ceases and life becomes a process of continual discovery. We begin to appreciate that the freedom of reality expressed in the complete and fulfilled life all human beings seek—and few find—is actually the simplicity of the ordinary.

“I am just loving The Alchemy of Freedom. A. H. Almaas tells it like it is, without neglecting how it seems to be. He eloquently describes the indescribable ‘true nature’ of reality as the ‘philosophers’ stone,’ the key to the secret of existence, as enlightened, extraordinary ordinariness. He seems intriguingly to speak as if enlightened, yet, most importantly and blessedly, he does not claim ‘enlightenment’ as his possession. He does not trap himself in what the Chan masters of old called ‘the demon ghost cave’ of considering one’s self to be enlightened, and so, set apart from life and above others. In fact, he manifests himself as open-minded, open-hearted, and ever curious. He clearly enjoys life through the exquisitely equalizing wisdom experience. The inconceivable voidness’s compassionate, clearlight way seems to unfold him as its oracular mirror. I so much appreciate his teaching. I could go on, but better that he goes on with his lapidary guidance, and best that you all continue your own journey of discoveries with this great gift of a book!” —Tenzin Robert A. F. Thurman, founder and president of Tibet House US and author of Man of Peace: The Illustrated Life Story of the Dalai Lama of Tibet

For those in the San Francisco Bay Area, Almaas has scheduled two public book talks and signings in 2017 to share more of his insights on alchemy and the philosophers’ stone as keys to the secrets of liberation.

  • Tantra of Everyday Life

    Tantra of Everyday Life

Beyond Sex Tantra and  Tantra & Yoga in Everyday Life

I’ve been working with the Ridhwan School to help promote their upcoming 5-day retreat on Tantra of Everyday Life. My initial efforts focused on distributing the flyer and getting it posted on Facebook and a PR release.

The next step was working with others to help create this video interview by Tami Simon (Sounds True) with A. H. Almaas and Karen Johnson.

Then I turned to getting the retreat listed on online event calendars and reaching out to blogsites with comments and emails to bloggers. While doing this I found this great article from 1995 by Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati – Tantra and Yoga in Everyday From the article:

In yoga we gradually open all the doors of our personality. Therefore, jnana, understanding and awareness, is the first principle, and sadhana, systematic practice, is the second principle or practical aspect of tantra. But we are not confined to a meditative process in which we sit and internalize and begin to observe the body, mind, emotions, nature etc. Tantra is also living meditation – it affects how we live moment to moment. The instincts that manifest within and control our actions and behaviour, instincts of love, desire, security, fear and sexual satisfaction, are all to be observed and known.

There are many misconceptions about tantra. Tantra is generally seen as indulgence, as a way of life which allows total freedom. But the practical yogic components with which we work in tantra in relation to our daily life are awareness and meditation. Tantra and yoga are complementary. In tantra you will find a very broad system which allows you to understand and accept your life as it is without imposing change. Rather you allow transformation to gradually happen as you become intensely aware of your experiences and expressions.

beyond sex tantraI also came across Beyond Sex Tantra by Tanja Diamond.

My definition of the concept of Tantra is: “Tantra is the ultimate love affair with yourself and all of your existence. In the process of igniting your internal flame, you come to experience all ordinary moments as extraordinary experiences. Immersed in that experience, you realize that you are the divine, there is nothing else to need or want, but that moment.”

Only 3 percent of Tantra is even related to sex. Yes, you say, but sex is the part you want to learn about.

Well here’s the thing. You can not have a truly spiritual sexual relationship with another until you have a truly spiritual life with yourself and others with your clothes on.

Then I created another video and posted it on FB and the web.

I suppose, like many, I associate the word tantra first and mostly with sex, Kama Sutra and such. I guess this is the the result of good advertising by sexual tantrikas over the years and the erotic and exotic attraction of far-east mysteries.

    A. H. Almaas and Karen Johnson authored The Power of Divine Eros last year. I’m assuming that Tantra of Everyday Life will delve deeper into the subject matter of that book and take Quasar2014 attendees somewhere revelatory within themselves while keeping their clothes on.

  • What’s a Little Suffering Between Friends?

What’s a Little Suffering Between Friends?

The suffering wasn’t as bad as I anticipated

The exact words from a friend who a few hours earlier was doing all she could do to remain present in the midst of excruciating pain and suffering!

We sat sipping coffee as she inquired into a personal situation that soon had her on the precipice of the abyss – oceans of tears could be seen behind those eyes into the soul. As she articulated the early childhood roots of the pain and suffering – we both just kept breathing, sipping coffee in a crowded cafe and being with what was arising.

In the midst of the exploration into the pain and suffering that was arising, there were bright moments of laughter and happiness. A seemingly paradoxical thing, but not for those who love the truth. One of the most interesting and powerful turnings in life occurs when the truth becomes more important that pain or pleasure.

It’s an amazing thing to share a journey into such depth and also discover a great phrase for a bumper sticker!

It’s natural that human beings don’t want to suffer. Everyone wants to feel good. Not only human beings, but all living beings want not to suffer; they want to feel good, to feel safe. It is obvious, a given. Many people approach our work with the motivation to be free of suffering. This is one of the main attractions of work like this: we hope that it will help us with our suffering, our pain, and our difficulties. Most people come to the work because of suffering and dissatisfaction, because of some or other discontent with their lives.

But what is suffering? Why do we suffer? And why do we sometimes suffer more when we start paying attention to ourselves? We know that suffering is universal, that a large part of everyone’s experience is suffering, pain, discontent, difficulty. And most of the time we don’t know what to do about it. We have no idea why there is so much suffering or what we can do to alleviate it, although we always do want to alleviate it. To really penetrate this issue, to have a thorough understanding that will relieve our suffering is no small thing. – A. H. AlmaasInexhaustible Mystery

  • Unilocal Relationships

    Unilocal Relationships

    What’s Possible in Human Relationship?

unilocal relationships heartWhen it comes to relationships, what are the possibilities for the human soul? Do soul mates exist? If everything is one, what’s the implication for human relationship? How deep can intimate relationships go? Why all the attraction between these human hearts?

These were just a few of the questions that were addressed at a recent exploration I attended on Unilocal Relationship. What the heck is unilocal, you may ask? Well in the grand scheme of reality which includes such crazy things as being/nonbeing, nonduality, singularity, timlessness and such – unilocal is a term used to describe the experience where time and space fold into everywhere and everytime being present. A wild concept, yes?

Some of the exploration included tidbits that were touched upon in the recent dialogue between A. H. Almaas & Cynthia Bourgeault – Conscious Love: The Power of Revelation.

There were over 200 people in attendance and I noticed that most “partners” did many of the exercise together – couples were interested in exploring their intimate relationship and history together.

I thought I might try to use Powtoon in an attempt to address the concept of unilocal relationship – an impossibility, but it was fun playing around with it! In the first place, unilocal relationships are not chosen by individuals, created via soul mates or necessarily something to aspire to. Unilocal is very mysterious, radical and mind-boggling – something for everyone!

  • Ego Massage – Relax into Enlightenment

Ego Massage – Relax into Enlightenment

How do we get the ego to relax – allowing us to wake up?

ego massageMore than once, I have heard A. H. Almaas say that all we need is a good massage for the ego. His point being that fundamentally, the ego is nothing more than a collection of tension patterns in the mind and body.

These patterns become habitual ways of knowing ourselves and relating to the world. They show up as conditioned armoring in the body, an area of deep curiosity for Wilhelm Reich. These tensions and patterns affect how our awareness and perception – what we see and how we see it. Many of the beliefs and attitudes that we feel are conscious choices are nothing more than unconscious creations of these contractions in the psyche.

More and more I notice that during meditation there are periods where I am noticing tension patterns and streams of cycling thoughts, emotions, sensations and energies that I am bringing attention to – then relaxing within them. As an example, I may notice a deepening sense of concentrated awareness and an increasing tension in my forehead, neck or shoulders. When I notice this, I stay with the deepening awareness and at the same time relax the area of tension in the body.

When the tension in the body relaxes, I notice the awareness deepens even more.

One thing I practice relaxing with is the sense of self – that guy who thinks he is meditating. An interesting “mirror reversing” experience can arise where there is more just meditation and not so much someone there meditating.

I think there could be a great demand for ego masseuses. Do you know an ego masseuse you can recommend? What’s the going rate for a 90-minute ego massage – and I don’t mean the type of ego stroking that increases my identification with the sense of a separate self, just the opposite… fade to black!
